Light Up Blue with Austism

Down syndrome is associated with impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth, and a particular set of facial characteristics. Individuals with this disorder usually have diminished intellectual abilities and mild to moderate disabilities. Until comparatively recently, children with Down syndrome were considered 'ineducable'. The majority of children with Down syndrome have only gained access to education within the last 30 years.

As observed and studied, children with Down Syndrome can usually do most things that a normal child can do, though some of them may do so later than other children. Early intervention programs, beginning in infancy, help affected children achieve their individual potential. Since many children with Down syndrome will usually take longer to learn new things, special programs may help them learn better. Children with Down syndrome benefit from living with their family and interacting with other children. Certain activities that develop learning, language, gross and fine motor, socialization and self-help skills benefit these children. On-site day care and sibling programs promote inclusion.

Early intervention, a good home environment and sound medical care can help a person with Down syndrome immensely. Social isolation and educational deficiency will have a negative effect on any child's development, including a child with Down syndrome. Down Syndrome schools concentrate on inclusion, building self-esteem, and intellectual exercises. In addition, speech therapy and behavior management therapy is also included.
